The meniscus is a wedge-like rubbery cushion in your knee. There is a meniscus in the inside and outside of each knee. The function of the meniscus is to help the knee carry weight, glide and turn. A meniscus can be torn by twisting, pivoting, cutting, or decelerating. Older people can injure the meniscus without any trauma as the meniscus weakens and wears over time. A torn meniscus often causes stiffness, swelling, and pain at the joint line. Treatment of symptomatic meniscal tears usually involves a knee arthroscopy to either remove or repair the torn portion of the meniscus.
