Jay Minorik, MD

I recently dislocated my shoulder, what are my treatment options?

A shoulder dislocation occurs when the head of the upper arm bone (humerus) comes out of the socket (glenoid). This can be a complete dislocation, which usually requires medical intervention to relocate, or a partial dislocation (subluxation) which usually relocates on its own. Your shoulder can dislocate in any direction, but the most common direction is anterior. Dislocations can cause pain, swelling, weakness, and recurrent instability. Treatment usually involves immobilization followed by rehabilitation exercises to restore motion and strength. If your shoulder has recurrent episodes of dislocations or subluxations, surgery may be necessary to stabilize the joint.
